Countdown To Valentine’s Thrifty for Kids

Now, I could have spend about $4 per kid on a box of premade Valentine’s or a Candy Valentine but lately I have been feeling kinda over the top crafty so when came up with a more cavity free alternative for the same price.Got to LOVE Keegstra’s Dollar Store in Hudsonville. I got this pack of 24 bubbles for $1!!!! Removed all of the birthday bubble labels. Pretty girly necklaces at 8/$1 Flame boy pencils at 12/$1 Well, this part could have been way cooler but we are a little on the cheap side over here when it comes to printer ink so we just have black. I make these to fit around the bubble jars, using the original one as a template. I have FedEx adhesive shipping labels so I printed them on that so they would stick. You could use regular paper and a bit of glue too. (or address labels?) Girls got these with a note on top!! (snack bags were $1 for 50 of them)

So…. I spent $8 ($4 per kids’ class) and a couple hours. I hope they enjoy passing them out!

We got a Kindle for Christmas last year and I just LOVE it!Made myself a case last year and was asked to make some for a friend’s Mom and MIL.Double Layer of Flannel and Soft fabric on the inside to protect from scratches.Button/Elastic closure.Fits the regular size Kindle and the Kindle Fire as well. And I got to use some of my favorite pink fabric:)

OK, so I know I am way behind here but I am working on blogging all of my projects that I have worked on in the last year but was too busy to share!

FOUND: two pieces of leftover MDF Trim in the garage

HAD: tons of scrapbooking paper and stickers I never use anymore

BOUGHT: metal clips and thick wire

MADE: Mother’s Day Gift

Cut paper and mod-podged the background.

Used my circle punch to punch out enough circles for the letters.

Added Stickers to circles and cut out extra shapes and the heart and mod-podged them on as well.

Screwed on the metal clips and wrapped the wire for a holder and its the perfect grandma holder for all of the kids art work and treasures!

Store bought frosting for Matthew’s birthday but I did attempt some decoration:)

And Michael’s birthday is New Year’s Eve and it being right after Christmas I am totally burned out in the baking department so Grandma came through with a cupcake and candle – Sorry Michael!

So, I got it together and used this tutorial (even has a video to watch) to make my first ruffle cake. Ended up being even easier than I thought and not too much time either!

And of course we had to put some Strawberry Shortcakes on top!

Yep – I got her her very own sewing machine!! She loves it!

Christmas Dress

Two Separate Bridesmaid Dresses in the SAME color – one from my sister and one for $4.99 from Goodwill.

Ruffling all those strips. Found a really easy way to ruffle, turn your tension all the way up and your stitch length all the way up and wha – la = Ruffle!

Used the lining of the bridesmaid dress for the “under skirt” part, using the bottom for the finished hem.

This is the actual hemline of one of the dresses that I made into a hair flower.

Done!!

My one and only precious little girl! Just recently finished a fur shrug so she can wear this through the winter.

I decided to invest in a custom stamp with my shop name on it. I did some searching around and settled on StampOutOnline on Etsy. She made me this super cool stamp and although I had no idea what I was doing, she recommended the clear block and I cannot thank her enough. It has made is soooo much easier to use and position. While some other sellers charged extra for proofs and extra for clear blocks and had over a four week turnaround, LIsa from StampOutOnline sent over a proof after my first inquiry after I only asked for a price on a custom stamp. I was immediately hooked since I was having a hard time with the black and white images that the others requested (me and graphics do not get along that well:) I was able to request a couple of changes and got the perfect design. Not to mention above all, I received the stamp within a week of purchase and it only took that long because it was the weekend and Columbus day!!! So…since I love instant gratification I LOVE this seller. Here is some things that I used my stamp for already. Some paper bags that I will be using for my kitchen towels at a upcoming home show. I make circle labels/tags with a circle punch and my stamp, labels like these cost upwards of $20 for 100 and I just made 125 with some leftover cardstock and can make infinite more!!!Also stamped some gift bags and some small pillow boxes for my small hair flowers. Just in case you wondered, I got all of the bags and boxes from Labels By The Sheet, I site that sells tons of labels but also bags and boxes. All of these were on clearance and were just cents a piece!

A couple firsts for me this week. I did a burp cloth with full name applique on it for a friend who just had a baby.

Another first was BIBS. I an definitely not a bib queen (yet) but it was really fun to try something new.

I got the fabric printed at Spoonflower.com and just did a swatch (8x8) for each of them. Its only $6 for the swatch and that includes shipping and I even got one free because I ordered on free swatch day!!! On the second one I added a terrycloth insert to give the bib more “soakability” .

Now usually four hooded towels are a walk in the park – a naptime diversion. Well….. not so much since the pregnancy. I officially started these TWO weeks ago and last night I finally buckled down and finished them. They are all for new babies at church – so fun!!

Baby on the Way!!

Well…. Tressa is super excited to be a BIG sister!! We are expecting #4 the Lord willing in March.

So if you know me at all you can probably guess that I don’t feel so well at this point. I have been able to take a couple of medications to help with the pukes and the nausea. Hopefully in a few more weeks the worst will be over. (and I won’t sleep ALL the time!)

I had an ultrasound this week that showed a little baby with a heartbeat of 170. It is still amazing to me what a tiny miracle it is to be soooo tiny and still have this beating heart. We are incredibly thankful for a healthy pregnancy thus far.

We told the kids yesterday that mom was going to have a baby and this first thing Michael says is “TODAY!!??” Thinking we are having this baby right now!! So cute. Subconsciously he must have already known because almost a month ago while I was getting ready for church in the bathroom he came in and rubbed my belly and said it looked like I was growing a baby in there. I just laughed and immediately changed my clothes! (I would have probably been in tears if I wasn’t pregnant :)

Tressa took a while to get used to it and just kept saying No like maybe I would change my mind and just let her stay the baby. At supper time while we were reading she whispers to me “ I want to hold the baby” it just melted my heart! Later at night she does a scooping motion on my tummy and them makes a cradle with her arms and says that is how she is going to hold the baby. I think she is going to be the best little mommy’s helper!

So here is my guilt list for the last couple of weeks:

***Thanks to Tricia and Ellen and Shannon who let my kids wander over by them while we were camping since mom never wanted to get out of bed in the morning! ***Sorry to Ruth who I really want to help do diaper bags for the girls at church but just can’t seem to get in the swing of things. I did manage to get some baby gifts made but that is about all the sewing I have been able to do!
***Also sorry to about the last 5 ladies at church who had babies … I made NO food – totally falling down on the job!

***I also had grand expectations of having people over for coffee and at the pool and for supper and all that fun stuff now that we have a house this summer but all that kinda fell flat too. Oh well, I guess next year will come soon enough.

Now was are going to Wisconsin for the next few days and hopefully I will be able to perk up a little bit although that is why is was necessary to let everyone know about the baby since we are going with John’s family and they would for sure guess anyway!

Well, I think that is all I have to say for now. I will keep you updated on baby’s progress and hopefully get back to more fun projects soon. I already have a few new bath things lined up for a customer in Italy, a custom tool belt that I promised someone a long time ago and have to make a pillow for Matthew for Kindergarten (can’t believe he is going to be in School!!!) I had a cute pattern and letters all picked out and he said he didn’t like it and wanted cars instead so I guess I better just do that:)

What Can Storque Do For You?

Very Unexpectedly I was featured in the Etsy Finds Storque Article and it was about a third of the way down so not even front and center. These are the towels and the photo that was in the article (one of my favorites – and a new product that I just started making) So here is how it impacted my shop. Below is a screen shot of Craftopolis. The first day I got over 4000 page views – up from 300-500 a day. The next three days I noticed an increase as well. Not to mention the incredible amount of new shop hearts!!!This is Google Analytics – COOL! 975 Visits the first day. So far this is the stats on the actual listing : 209 hearts!! I don’t think I have ever had over 15 on a single item before.As for sales – I am shipping to Brazil, Puerto Rico and Italy this week. My total items that I have sold in the last week is approaching 60!!!

I don’t count on Etsy to bring traffic to my shop but when they do – it is AMAZING.

Well, some one must have let the cat out of the bag about me selling Kitchen Towels because all of a sudden I have had a bunch of orders YEAH!!! Well, I have been a super duper busy beaver lately and besides all of the hooded towels and beach towels here are a few more things that I have been working on. I LOVE the new Michael Miller fabric - So boyish with the trucks and all. A recent shopping trip to JoAnn's got me the lemon fabric which I instantly fell in love with - so bright and summery!! My newest towel "thing" is the huge name applique - I started them just for my kids and then the swim teacher wanted some and then her neighbor etc. etc. so I decided to list them in my shop. I enjoy making them because I like to sew so it is a nice change from the embroidery (plus I can do it at the same time as the embroidery machine is going!) Well - enjoy these summer days!!

Although it is not all the way finished, I did finish their beds (except we are waiting for a while to get headboards ) . I want to add stars and circles to their walls yet but am still deciding what to do exactly! Did a really simple curtain with some orange grosgrain. (and yes, their names both start with M Matthew and Michael and although I am asked about a hundred times a week, No they are not twins:) they are just close!)

I was fortunate to make some very special towels this week for Peighton. Here is her story:

Prayers for Peighton
Peighton Rose Bonk, daughter of Ben & Jen Bonk, was born August 1, 2009. Soon after arrival, some health problems were noticed. Peighton was transferred to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI hours after being born. Peighton spent about 5 days there then she was taken by survival flight to Ann Arbor, MI Mott's Children’s Hospital. Many tests, pokes and procedures later, the doctor's finally had some answers. Peighton was diagnosed with a form of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Goldenhar syndrome, she has a single right kidney, asplenia and heterotaxy. On August 12th, Peighton underwent her first heart surgery. The first surgery would try to let her grow so she could undergo her next surgery when she was about 6 months old. Peighton was able to go home on September 5, 2009 until her next surgery. On February 2, 2010, Peighton underwent her second heart surgery. The surgeon had planned to do the hemi-fontan. During surgery the surgeon was unable to do the hemi-fontan so he had to do the bi-directional glenn instead. This surgery prepares Peighton for the next surgery which will be the Fontan and should be done when she is over 20lbs. and 3-4 years old.
As of February 13th, Peighton is still in the ICU at Mott's Children Hospital.

Treat Bags:

I decided to share this so I needed to find my source since this was not my idea (most aren't!) This is from Craftzine Blog and I get daily emails from them with ideas of this and that. At the end of January I saw this idea for Treat bags from a Tablecloth. Glanced, filed (in my email folder as well as my brain) and forgot... until... I needed something for Valetine's Day at Preschool. Never did look up the article again, just went from memory. Well, today when I looked it up you would never guess... I picked the exact same tablecloth from Target as the one in the sample! Anyway, Here is the Craftzine Link that also links to the idea owner's blog as well!

On the blog above there are directions. I did it a little differently. I cut out a square and folded it in half and sewed the bottom and one side. Then I sewed the corning in a triangle shape from he inside (i have no idea what it is called) so it had a bottom. also, to save time, I cut the squares out of the tablecloth using the edges as the tops so I would not have to finish the edges and no velcro here! ( I used one tablecloth and only the edges and got 14 treat sized bags out of it)

I added Felt letters to each of the bags and felt heart to the teacher's bags. Spray adhesive works wondering for cutting out time when it came to attaching all the letters but I have not yet found a faster way to cut out all the letters. . A hit indeed. Do you know?? Walmart has Easter Tableclothes now for $5 each and really cute. I had to restrain myself from buying them for no reason just becuase I had a good idea!

So I bet you are wondering what we filled it with?? First we made Heart shaped sugar cookies frosted pink with sprinkles that we (me and matthew) put in ziplocks and they went into the bottom. We added a pencil (12/$1 at the Dollar Store - Conversation Hearts on them - When Matthew got home he said they were no good becuase "everybody" brought them! {that Dollar Store is within walking distance of preschool so I am not suprised!}) Also added Valentine's that I got last year on clearance after Valentine's Day. (after looking around this year, it probably wasn't worth storing them all year, they are pretty cheap:)

Super Fun and easy sewing project. You could even use these (maybe a little larger) as reusable lunch bags.

Our new refrig is stainless steel and does not allow magnets:( so what to do with all the stuff I usually hang on the fridge. I found bulletin boards at Ikea and covered them with fabric after appliqueing a little birdie on it. They are hanging righ next to the lockers in the entry area so I can hang things up as soon as Matthew comes home with all his goodies from school.

First off I finished the dining room. I found "chargers" at World Market and made cardboard inserts to cover with fabric. My hubby says he "can live with it". I kind of like it. I did a diamond shape to mirror the shape of the wine rack next to it. (disregard the mess, it is a work in progress)

I have been wanting to try these FOREVER! I finally got around to it this morning. I used a velvet which was *very* forgiving when it comes to seeing the seams and such. I added an organza flower (almost first attempt at this) I think with some tweaking of the pattern I can make them a little better and faster. They did turn out quite a bit smaller than I anticipated so I think I will probably blow up the pattern for next time.

I have had a bunch of people ask for some recipes so I am listing all of them here. You can always find this post from the recipe link on the sidebar.

Peppermint Fudge:
1 Package Vanilla Baking Chips
1 Jar Vanilla Frosting
1/2 tsp Peppermint Extract
Red Food Coloring
2 Peppermint Candy Canes

Melt Vanilla Chips in the Microwave, Add frosting and melt together. Add extract, stir. Pour into 9 x 9 Pan. Drip food coloring and swirl with knife. Add crushed Candy Canes. Refrigerate.

Fantasy Fudge:
3 c. sugar
3/4 c. margarine
2/3 c evaporated milk
12 oz chocolate chips
7 oz marshmallow creme
1 c. chopped nuts
1 tsp vanilla

Combine sugar, marg, and milk. Boil 5 min. Stir in Chocolate chips. remove from heat, add marshmallow, nuts, and vanilla. Put in 9 x 9 or 9 x 13 pan.

White Chocolate Clusters:
Melt:
1 pkg white baking chips
2 T peanut butter

Add:
1 c. mini marshmallows
1 c. peanuts
1 1/2 c rice crispies

Drop onto wax paper and cool. (don't dilly dally, they harden fast!!)

Peanut Butter Balls:

1 c graham crackers
3 1/2 c. powered sugar
2 sticks margarine
1 c crunch peanut butter

Mix well and roll in to balls. After this I like to put them in the refrig or the freezer so they harden a little so it is easier to dip them.

Turtles!!
Melt: 14 oz caramels ( I use Kraft individually wrapped squares) with 1/4 c. evaporated milk

Add 2 c. pecans after the caramels are melted (2 c. says the recipe. I like to do 1 1/2 c. pecan halves plus 1 c. pecans chopped, they are not so gooey this way and stay together better)

Dip in Melted Chocolate, Cool.

**** very important. You need to drop these by the teaspoon but from MUCH practice I finally figured out that you should spray the wax paper with non stick spray that way you won’t be picking little pieces of paper the bottom of your caramels !

4 T milk
2 tsp vanilla
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. white sugar
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
3 1/2 c. flour

Well, I am back online after a week of being separated from the outside world, or so it seems. Earlier this week I finished packing all of my Christmas Baking up into Christmas tins for distribution. It was an all morning affair but *sigh* I am finally done!! Here are some pics of how it went:

Christmas Baking (Long) Day 10 ~ More Recipes!!!

WOW, super long day today. It was supposed to snow all day so I planned to stay home. It didn’t snow too bad but I did stay home (sort of good because I didn’t have to move boxes then) OK here we go:

1. Finished Peanut Blossoms, have them coming out of my ears now!!

2. Made Peanut Butter Balls: want to know how ?? here it is:

1 c graham crackers

3 1/2 c. powered sugar

2 sticks margarine

1 c crunch peanut butter

Mix well and roll in to balls. After this I like to put them in the refrig or the freezer so they harden a little so it is easier to dip them.

Melt chocolate. Can used either almond bark or chocolate chips/wax .

Dip balls into chocolate mixture and place on wax paper (or trash bags like I did since I ran out of wax paper !)

3. Make Turtles!! my favorite (to eat, not make!)

Same as Peanut butter balls, melt chocolate, (I was running out of my almond bark to I did half bark and half chocolate chips and it worked fine.) These for sure need to be in the freezer or they are a sloppy mess. I put one pan in the freezer at a time and switch them out as I dip them

Now, you can’t be pokey Joe on these, the chocolate doesn’t last forever!!

Here is the real picture! I am a MESS as is my kitchen.

I am finished with the baking part I think so tomorrow I will be cleaning up and packing every thing up so we can move on Friday and Saturday. Next week I plan to pack them in the tins and get cards done!!!

Did a quick run to Aldi and Wal-Mart ( which is out of Caramel squares already!)Finished the Peanut Butter Cups (ran out of Reese's the other day so got more tonight)

Did 3 batches of Peppermint Fudge (now ran out of peppermint extract so I may be done with those)

Started on the first half of the Peanut Blossoms (a lot more to go! ) Obviously ran out of Paper towel so using Valentine's Napkins:)

Well, have to show your this. I LOVE this pan. It is a WILTON brand 11 x 13 with a cover. Also showing off my kitchen labels from MyTwoBabes

1/2 c. sugar

1/2 c. brown sugar

Day 5: Shopping again!!

Then 2 more batches of Fantasy Fudge. The flexible silicone pans are working AMAZINGLY!! No waste, no sticking, I even bought one more today.

First Batch of Peppermint Fudge, back by popular demand it is super creamy but very easy to make.

8 Batches of White Chocoloate Clusters: ended up with about 230 of them.

Now: TIRED!!! We are moving a week later than we thought so I have to try to get more done here than I planned.

How to bake Christmas Goodies for 100+: Days 1-4

Since this is my fourth (but largest) year of making an assortment of goodies for my husband's clients, I thought I would bring you along. Everyone always asks: "how do you do it!". If you break it down it really isn't that bad (plus Obama is speaking tonight so nix the TV:)

DAY 1: December 26, 2008. Went to Wal-Mart and bougth 75 Christmas tins (red with white snowflakes) and 25 red circle trays at 50% off ( I will show you them later, they are still packed away)

DAY 2: (last week) Shop at Aldi for basic baking supplies. Mix Peanut Blossom Cookie Mix and Freeze. (6 batches)

DAY 3: Mix Peanut Butter Balls mix and freeze. (6 batches)

DAY 4: (today) Mix Peanut Butter Cup Mix and Freeze. (6 batches) Make first 2 batches of Fantasy Fudge. Tried something new this year. I always seen to "waste" some fudge becuase it is hard to get it out of the pan even if I line with wax paper first. I found these silicone flexible pans at Aldi for $3.99 so I am giving them a try.

Next I need to shop for more special things like evaporated milk, caramels, white baking chips, dipping chocolate, almond paste, white frosting, etc.

This car seat has been through two boys and it has seen its better days. That being said, it is still totally usable and safe and Tressa is ready for this size. I used some fleece fusible backing and Hobby Lobby fabric and made a slip cover for the seat. It has elastic across the back to hold it on. It was much harder than I anticipated and the edges didn't turn out the greatest but you can't see it so it doesn't really matter!!

I purchased a bracelet through alchemy on Etsy. I sent the seller the beads to make it since I already had bought them but couldn't make anything that was passable (I don't DO jewelry at ALL).

Well, anyway, I have not heard hide nor tail of this girl since she said she recieved the beads. I have convoed, emailed and filed a non-delivery claim with Etsy. I have been patient becuase I did not want to loose my beads (they were not cheap!) It has been two months and NOTHING!!

I didn't realize how long it had been, now it is too late for paypal claim. This was supposed to be a special Mother's Bracelet with my kids' names ont them and now I have nothing!! I can't post on Forums becuase that would be "calling out" but I don't know what to do! The seller has 100% feedback but has not updated shop in over a month and is just MIA!!

So, any suggestions on what I can do?

Here is the finished product of one of my Projects in the Works. Remember this post? All of my frames looked very similar to that one. I found then at Love INC for between $.50 and $1.50 each, what a steal!!

To start, I painted the frames and spray coated with clear finish. All of this fabric was from my stash and most of the ribbon although I did have to buy some solids because I usually use prints for my towels.

I covered the old pictures and cardboard with fabric and attached the ribbons. For this project, spray adhesive is your friend!! I love it especially so I could keep the fabric straight and smooth on the front side while finishing the back.

I embellished them with a little something and still have a few more to finish before I show those. Wouldn’t these be cute for a little girl’s bows?

Here at Eco Creations green living is not just a fad. All of my designs are inspired by nature and I pride myself on the fact that all of our materials are eco-friendly.

Each piece of jewelry I create is completely handcrafted by me. While I design both macrame and beaded jewelry, I must admit that I prefer working on the knotted jewelry.

I also paint abstracts. I love the feeling of paint all over my hands and as such use only my hands to create my paintings.

My new business cards are here and I love them. Two-sided glossy, oohhhhh!! This is a different design but was done by MyTwoBabes when I opened my shop along with the other one. I decided to switch off for something new!

I designed these with VistaPrint. I don't know if everybody likes working with Vista but I love their postcards and you can't beat the prices. These are Thank You postcards with all of my links on the back and a space to write a message to my customers. I got 250 of them free just paid $6.61 shipping. Not too bad I don't think:)

Saturday we had a church outing to Post Family Farm. The kids got to have a tractor barrel ride. Then we all went on a hay ride after which we had a campfire together. It was a lot of fun and Matthew can't wait to go back next week for his class trip.
